Injection Moulding Machine for Livestock Ear Tags

Livestock ear tags, the two-piece identification tags clipped through an animal ear, are moulded on horizontal injection moulding machines, with a flexible TPU panel and a stiffer nylon pin or buckle. Cavity count, panel area and any metal tip insert decide machine size. TPU must be dried well, as moisture causes splay and weak necks.

With soft TPU, machine choice centres on a screw suited to the elastomer, dependable drying and ejection that frees a flexible tag without tearing. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines that can mould ear tag parts and can recommend a configuration for your tag design.

Machine Requirements for Livestock Ear Tag Moulding

An ear tag has to flex for years without cracking and carry a readable number, so the machine set-up has to handle:

  • Low-shear screw suited to TPU melt
  • Hopper drying for hygroscopic TPU and nylon
  • Flat, even panel for laser or hot-stamp marking
  • Insert loading for metal tips in male tags
  • Ejection that releases soft parts without stretch marks
  • Even colour from masterbatch on bright tag shades

Recommended Machine for Livestock Ear Tags

Ear tags are small parts, and the machine is sized by the number of cavities per mould and the panel area. The E Series (75-180 T) suits typical male and female tag moulds. Where a producer runs high cavity tools or a larger hot runner, the H Series (120-350 T) gives the extra clamping and shot capacity.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions tag makers ask our engineers when planning TPU moulding.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Livestock Ear Tags?
Moderate cavity tag moulds usually fit the E Series. The H Series is considered for high cavity tools or larger panels, and the screw is specified for TPU in either case.
  • Why Must TPU Be Dried Before Moulding Ear Tags?
TPU picks up moisture from the air. Wet TPU degrades in the barrel, giving splay, bubbles and lower tear strength at the neck. A desiccant dryer feeding the hopper is the usual set-up.
  • Can a Metal Tip Be Moulded Into the Male Tag?
Yes, where the design uses one. The steel tip is loaded into the mould as an insert before each shot, so insert holding, mould protection and loading time all need planning.
  • How Are Ear Tag Colours Kept Consistent?
Tags come in bright colours that help identify herds. Steady masterbatch dosing, enough back pressure for mixing and a full purge between colours keep shades even across batches.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Livestock Ear Tag?
Yes. Share the male and female tag drawings or samples, the TPU and nylon grades, part weights, mould sizes, cavities and output target, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Livestock and Poultry Parts Too?
Often. Poultry nipple drinkers, chick feed trays, poultry feeders and poultry drinkers run on the same class of horizontal machine, though each needs its own screw and mould check.
