Injection Moulding Machine for Seedling and Nursery Trays

Reusable seedling and nursery trays are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, mostly in PP, as one large part with many cells. Tray length and width fix the projected area and clamping force, and the number of cells sets how hard the mould is to fill. Flatness matters most, because a warped tray rocks on benches and in seeders.

For injection-moulded seedling trays, selection centres on clamp size for a wide flat part, shot capacity and gating that reaches every cell. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for tray production and can recommend a configuration for your tray and mould.

Machine Requirements for Seedling / Nursery Tray Moulding

An injection-moulded tray is a wide, thin grid of cells that must stay flat over many seasons, so these points decide the machine:

  • Platen size and tie-bar spacing for wide tray moulds
  • Multi-point hot runner gating to fill every cell evenly
  • Fast injection for thin cell walls and long flow paths
  • Venting at cell bases to prevent burn marks and short shots
  • Even cooling across the tray to limit warpage
  • UV stabilised PP for repeated outdoor use

Recommended Machine for Seedling / Nursery Trays

Small trays with fewer cells can run on the E Series (75-180 T). Standard-size trays have a large projected area and wide moulds, so tie-bar spacing and tray shot weight decide between the C Series (140-320 T) and the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Answers to questions tray producers ask about moulding and machine size.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Seedling Trays?
Tray footprint is the deciding factor. Compact trays suit the E Series, and full-size reusable trays move to the C or H Series, where wider platens and more shot capacity are available.
  • Are Seedling Trays Injection Moulded or Thermoformed?
Both. Thin disposable trays are usually thermoformed from PS, PET or PVC sheet, which is a different process. Thicker reusable trays that last several seasons are injection moulded, mostly in PP.
  • How Many Gates Does a Seedling Tray Mould Need?
It depends on tray size and cell count. Wide trays usually need a hot runner with several drops so the melt reaches outer cells before it freezes, without high injection pressure.
  • Why Do Seedling Trays Warp After Moulding?
Warpage comes from uneven cooling, unbalanced filling or different shrinkage across the grid. Balanced gating, steady mould temperature and enough cooling time keep the tray flat.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Seedling / Nursery Tray?
Yes. Share the tray drawing or sample, material, part weight, mould length, width and height, and the quantity you need, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Nursery and Farm Products Too?
Yes. Nursery pots, agri crates, chick or poultry feed trays and greenhouse clips can be moulded on the same machine class, matched to each mould.
