Injection Moulding Machine for Combs

Plastic combs are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, usually in multi-cavity moulds, from PP, ABS, POM or nylon PA6. Thin teeth at the end of a long flow path, more than projected area, set the process, so injection speed, venting at the tooth tips and mould size against tie-bar spacing decide the machine.

For combs, selection weighs fast, controlled filling into the teeth against a mould that can be wide for its weight. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for comb production and can recommend a configuration once the mould size and cavity layout are known.

Machine Requirements for Comb Moulding

Comb moulding is a flow problem more than a clamping one. Points to check when choosing a machine:

  • Fast injection speed to fill thin teeth fully
  • Vents at the tooth tips to stop short shots
  • Tie-bar spacing that fits wide multi-cavity comb moulds
  • Teeth polished along the draw so they do not snag hair
  • Tight parting line to avoid flash on tooth tips
  • Dried nylon PA6 for heat-resistant salon combs

Recommended Machine for Combs

A comb is light, but the mould can be long and wide because of the flow length and cavity layout. The E Series (75-180 T) suits many single and multi-cavity comb tools. Larger moulds go to the C or H Series, where platen size and tie-bar space are checked before the tonnage figure.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions comb makers raise when planning a new mould.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Combs?
Many comb moulds run on the E Series. The mould outline often decides more than the clamp calculation, so wide tools with many cavities may need the platen and tie-bar space of the C or H Series.
  • Why Do Comb Teeth Get Short Shots?
Melt cools as it travels down long, thin teeth. Low injection speed, a cold mould, poor venting at the tips or a gate far from the teeth leaves tips unfilled. Gating along the spine shortens the flow.
  • Why Is a Bigger Machine Sometimes Quoted for a Comb Mould?
Comb moulds are long and wide for the part weight. A mould maker may quote a larger press so the mould fits between the tie-bars and on the platens, even when the clamping force calculation gives a lower figure.
  • Which Material Is Used for Hair Combs?
PP and ABS suit everyday combs, POM gives stiff teeth with a smooth glide, and PA6 handles dryer and straightener heat in salon combs. Nylon must be dried before moulding to avoid splay and brittle teeth.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Comb?
Yes. Share the comb drawing or sample, material, mould dimensions, cavity count, gate position and target output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Hair Care Parts Too?
Yes. Similar machines can produce hair clips, hair brush bases, hair bands and salon accessories such as sectioning clips, subject to the mould and material.
