Injection Moulding Machine for Crate and Bin Lids

Crate and bin lids are made in single-cavity moulds on horizontal injection moulding machines, from PP copolymer or HDPE. A lid weighs little but has a large flat projected area, so it can need tonnage close to the body it fits. Lid and body must shrink alike to seal and stack.

With lids, machine selection centres on clamp force for the flat area, flatness after ejection and a shot that fills thin panels fully. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for lid moulding and can recommend a configuration to match your crate or bin range.

Machine Requirements for Crate and Bin Lid Moulding

Lids are thin and flat but cover the whole crate or bin opening, and they have to match their body. Points to check:

  • Clamp force sized to the full flat lid area
  • Balanced cooling to keep a flat lid from warping
  • Shrinkage matched to the body so lids seal and stack
  • Thin panels filled fully without short shots at edges
  • PP grade for moulded living hinges on hinged lids
  • Even ejection that releases a large thin panel cleanly

Recommended Machine for Crate and Bin Lids

Smaller lids, or multi-cavity moulds for them, can run on the E Series (75-180 T). Lids for mid-size crates and bins usually need a C Series (140-320 T) or an H Series (120-350 T) machine, since the flat area drives tonnage more than weight does. Lids for full-size logistics crates sit at the top of these ranges and are checked on request.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common questions from buyers moulding lids for crates and bins.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Crate and Bin Lids?
Lid size and flat area decide it. The E Series covers smaller lids, while mid-size and larger lids move to the C or H Series. The lid machine is often close in tonnage to the body machine.
  • Why Does a Lid Need Nearly as Much Clamping Force as the Crate?
Clamping force follows projected area, not part weight. A lid covers almost the same footprint as its crate, so the force needed to keep the mould closed can be similar although the lid is far lighter.
  • Why Do Lids Not Fit Their Crates After Moulding?
Lid and body shrink by different amounts when material, wall thickness or mould temperature differs between the two tools. Qualifying lid and body as a pair, from the same material lot, catches this before production.
  • Can Hinged Lids Be Moulded in One Piece?
Yes, with a moulded living hinge in PP. HDPE lids use a separate hinge or pin instead. The hinge is usually flexed straight after ejection, while still warm, so it lasts in service.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Crate or Bin Lid?
Yes. Share the lid drawing, matching body details, material, part weight, mould dimensions and output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Material Handling Parts Too?
Often, yes. Plastic bins, picking bins, component trays and foldable crate parts can run on the same machines where mould size and tonnage fit.
