Injection Moulding Machine for Plastic Rulers

Plastic rulers are produced on horizontal injection moulding machines, from crystal PS, acrylic (PMMA) or PP, in one or more cavities. Ruler length sets the mould size and the platen area needed, and cavity count sets the clamping force. Straightness matters most: uneven cooling along a long, thin part bows or twists it, and a bent ruler is scrap.

Machine selection for rulers centres on fill along a long flow path, even mould cooling and repeatable shrinkage so the scale reads true. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for ruler production and can recommend a configuration for your ruler length and mould.

Machine Requirements for Plastic Ruler Moulding

A ruler is a long, flat part where straightness and scale accuracy count for more than surface shine. Points to check when selecting a machine:

  • Long flow length filled without short shots at the far end
  • Even cooling along the length to stop bow and twist
  • Cavity cut oversize to a calculated shrinkage allowance
  • Platen area for long moulds with several cavities
  • Clear PS or acrylic without flow lines or haze
  • Clean face for printing, hot stamping or engraving

Recommended Machine for Plastic Rulers

Rulers are light for their length, so the mould footprint often drives machine choice before shot weight does. The E Series (75-180 T) suits shorter rulers and moulds with fewer cavities. Longer rulers or multi-cavity tools that need more platen area move up to the C Series (140-320 T), and the largest to the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Ruler makers ask these questions most often before tooling up.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Plastic Rulers?
A horizontal machine with enough platen area for the ruler mould. Short rulers often fit the E Series, while long rulers or several cavities in one tool push the choice towards the C or H Series.
  • How Is a Moulded Ruler Kept Straight?
Gate position and even cooling along the length decide straightness. If one mould half runs hotter, or holding pressure falls off along the flow, the ruler bows or twists after ejection. Check parts flat once they have cooled.
  • How Is Scale Accuracy Held on a Plastic Ruler?
Accuracy is a shrinkage problem. The cavity is cut oversize to a calculated allowance for the chosen resin, and first-off parts are checked against a calibrated standard. Changing material or mould temperature shifts the scale.
  • Should a Ruler Be Moulded or Cut From Sheet?
Both routes exist. Rulers can be moulded in PS or acrylic, or die-cut and printed from extruded sheet. Confirm which route you are buying before quoting machines or tools, because the costs and equipment differ.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Plastic Ruler?
Yes. Share the ruler drawing or sample, length, material, part weight, mould dimensions, number of cavities and required output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Stationery Parts Too?
Yes. Comparable machines mould geometry instruments, clipboard fittings, pen stands and sharpener bodies, provided the mould fits between the tie bars.
